Emergency Weather Procedures

Parents are responsible for monitoring the status of school dismissal times when inclement weather is possible. Dismissal may occur before inclement weather begins.

Board Policy authorizes the Superintendent or his designee to close schools when weather or other emergency conditions would make operating the school bus fleet unsafe.

Factors considered when making the decision to cancel, delay or release early include:

  • existing and predicted weather conditions,

  • driving, traffic and parking conditions,

  • conditions that would make the operation of school difficult,

  • the school department's ability to effectively supervise students due to the weather.

Cancelations

  • Decisions are made by the Superintendent after consultation with the Operations and Transportation department staff.

  • The Bear Care Director, Email Allyson Berry, will make an independent decision regarding cancelation of the Bear Care program.

  • Information on cancelations can be obtained from the following sources:

    • The Spencer County Public Schools Website Homepage will post details regarding school cancelations by 6:00am.

    • The the radio stations and the local news channels will be notified with the details of the cancelations by 6:00am.

    • School Messenger Caller System will make calls to parents that HAVE NOT opt'ed out of the School Messenger program with a notification of the cancelations of school.  The call will take place anytime after 6:00am. 

Delayed Opening

  • Decisions are made by the Superintendent after consultation with the Operations and Transportation department staff.

  • In the event of a delayed opening, all school schedules may be delayed for either one (1) or two (2) hours.  That includes the bus stop times as well as school starting times.

  • The Bear Care Director, Email Allyson Berry, will make an independent decision regarding the delay of the Bear Care program.

  • Information on a delayed opening can be obtained from the same sources posted in the Cancelation section.

Early Dismissal

  • Decisions are made by the Superintendent after consultation with the Operations and Transportation department staff.
